Standing seam metal roofing is a popular type of roofing system that is commonly used on residential homes. Metal can be used to accent a roof or an entire roof system. Metal roofing installers are highly skilled professionals that have had years of training to master their craft.  They have a skill set that a typical shingle roof installer does not possess.  Standing seam metal is typically 3x’s the cost of a standard asphalt roof system.  There are several reasons for this including but not limited to the labor of installation is more time consuming.

Also known as fastener flange or nail strip systems, these panels are directly fastened to the roof deck via a flange or strip with pre-punched holes. This system is more straightforward and less labor-intensive to install, but typically it’s less suitable for areas with high winds or severe weather.

  • snap lock:

These systems feature panels that are rolled to include a locking mechanism which snaps together. The snap-lock system does not require any special seaming tools and is suitable for roofs with a pitch of 3:12 or
greater.

  • mechanically seamed:

This type of system requires a special seaming tool to join the panels together. There are two types of mechanical seams: single-lock (90-degree seam) and double-lock (180-degree seam). They are often used in regions with extreme weather due to their high resistance to wind uplift and water penetration. Mechanical seams are suitable for low-slope roofs.

  • Batten Panel Systems:

These systems include a metal cap that is installed over a seam that is between two metal panels. The cap can either be snapped over the seam (snap cap) or mechanically seamed. They can provide a distinctive appearance with the raised batten and are also effective at hiding the fasteners that secure the panels.

  • Symmetrical Panel Systems:

This system is designed so that the panels are symmetrical, which means they are the same on both sides of the seam. The advantage of this design is that panels can be replaced easily without disturbing adjacent panels, making repairs and modifications more efficient. Each of these systems can be made in a variety of materials, such as aluminum, copper, zinc, and steel (which can be galvanized, Galvalume coated, or weathering steel), and in various finishes and colors. The choice of the standing seam system depends on the specific requirements of the project, including the roof pitch, local climate, aesthetic preferences, and budget.

ADVANTAGES OF A STANDING SEAM METAL ROOFING SYSTEM

Durability

Metal roofing systems have an extremely long life span which makes them cost-effective. Where roof materials such as wood or shingles have a life-span of approximately 25-years, metal can last centuries.

Environmental Friendly

Copper roofs will outlast virtually every other roof material, but once the structure is retired, copper from the roof, flashing, and gutters can be reclaimed and recycled (highest recycling rate of any engineering metal). Similarly, many of the copper roofing sheets and shingles are made from recycled and repurposed material, rather than new material that is extracted and processed.

Mold and Rot Resistant

Metal roofing is naturally mold and rot-free – rainwater will simply wash away any surface dirt and biological contaminants.

STANDARD PARTS OF A STANDING SEAM METAL ROOFING SYSTEM

Panels: Standing Seam Metal roof Panels installed by Alte Standing seam metal roofing panels are typically made from steel, aluminum, or copper. These metal panels are available in a variety of lengths and widths.  Metal panels can be manufactured custom on site by hand with the proper tools and skill set, or they can be purchased as a kit from a manufacturer at any roofing supply house.  If you are considering a standing seam metal roof it is critical to confirm if the crew installing your metal roof has the skill set to custom-fabricate metal on-site. Alte Exteriors installers bend every piece – of every roof system – as each section is required. The result of this time and effort during installation provides each metal roof a more custom, high-end feel.   Metal roof panels are typically installed vertically on the roof and have raised seams which connect to adjacent panels.

Seam Clips: standing seam roof valley flashing metal with hidden clip system Seam clips are used to connect adjacent panels at the raised seams. They are typically made from the same material as the panels, or a slightly stronger metal. Seam clips are designed to securely hold the panels in place while allowing for thermal expansion and contraction.  The seam clips are completely concealed and cannot be seen visually once the roof is installed.

Ridge Cap: Metal Standing Seam Roof Capping system - installed by Alte The ridge cap is a specialized panel that is used to cover the ridge of the roof. It is typically installed after the main panels have been installed and is designed to provide a watertight seal at the highest point of the roof.  This ridge cap material can be purchased, or it can be custom bent on-site with proper tools.  The ridge cap can also act as part of the ventilation system for the attic and roof cavities of the home. This is accomplished by installing a “vented Z bar” between the metal ridge cap and the standing seam metal panels.

Drip Edge on Eave Fascia:

Eave fascia trim is installed at the bottom of the roof and is designed to provide a finished appearance while also preventing water from entering the building. It typically extends beyond the edge of the roof and is designed to direct water away from the building.

Drip Edge on Rake Fascia:

Drip edge is metal flashing that is installed at the edge of the roof. It is designed to direct water away from the building and prevent water from seeping under the roofing material.  A team like Alte Exteriors will hand craft this part of the roof on-site to fit your home perfectly.  They will install drip edge metal, not only on the eave, but also along the rake edges of the roof lines.  Next, standing seam panels would also be custom fabricated, which allows them to hem over the outside of the drip edge.  This technique in particular is a completely custom-made feature,  only offered by the highest skilled professionals in the market.

Underlayment:

Underlayment is a layer of material which is installed between the roof deck and the metal panels. It is designed to provide additional protection against water infiltration and to help control moisture.  This underlayment isn’t the standard ice-and-water protection or synthetic underlayment used for asphalt shingles.  The underlayment used on metal roofing is called High Temperature Ice and Water Shield.  This membrane not only protects your home with an additional layer but it is also made to withstand extreme temperatures (and not breakdown over time).  This material is installed with a self-adhering layer on the underside to adhere to the wood roof deck which creates a smooth surface on the exterior, facing the metal panels. The importance of using this material cannot be understated. Used correctly, it protects the roof from friction when thermal expansion and contraction happens.

Fasteners:

Fasteners are used to secure the metal panels to the roof deck. They are typically made from stainless steel or other corrosion-resistant materials. Alte Exteriors utilizes fasteners exclusively designed to provide a secure, long-lasting connection between the panels and the roof deck.
