Morris County Slate Roof – Roofing Company First Arrives on Site

This slate roof in Morris County, NJ was plagued by continuous roof leaks – badly needing roof repair. After becoming frustrated by the lack service and communication provided by their current roofer, the homeowner reached out to the experts at Alte Exteriors. To thoroughly inspect and investigate the slate roof, an appointment was scheduled with the head of roofing services at Alte Exteriors. Specializing in slate roofs, Dan Alte provided the knowledge and experience needed to correctly identify the issues plaguing the roof in Morris County, NJ. Upon arriving in Morris County, Dan met with the homeowners to discuss their needs, wants, and the history of the current slate roof. After discussing their desires and the future plan for the family home, Dan invited the homeowners to accompany him on an initial inspection. Slate is a tricky material to judge without close examination. From a distance the existing roofing slate did not appear to be in terrible condition.  Roof slates normally appear weathered, as they endure 80+ years in the elements. An additional survey of the slate roof surface was required to accurately determine the best plan of action. Daniel utilized drone technology – getting up close and personal with sections of the slate roof that would otherwise be inaccessible.

Investigation of Morris County Slate Roof – Diagnosing Need For Leak Repair / Roof Repair

The inspection revealed a drastically different story than would first appear from the ground at a distance. Daniel discovered over 95 missing or cracked slates. Leaks in two additional areas were identified. During the examination of the slate roof, Daniel found multiple areas with prior repair attempts – incorrectly implemented. With the homeowner’s best interest in mind, Alte Exteriors could not prepare a roofing repair proposal considering the current condition of the roof. A complete roof replacement was now required to correctly address the issues at hand.

IMPORTANT FACTORS TO CONSIDER WITH YOUR ROOFING COMPANY WHEN DECIDING THE TYPE OF SLATE, SIZE, AND COLOR ON ANY SLATE ROOF PROJECT:

  • The age of the home
  • Style of the home (ie: farmhouse / colonial / historical value}
  • Age of existing roof slates
  • Slope or steepness of the roof structure
  • Location the existing roof slates were sourced
  • Style, size, and color of existing slate roof system
  • Desired quality of the new slate roof system
  • Desired style of the slate new roof

Design / Installation of Morris County slate roof

THE PRODUCTION TEAM AT ALTE EXTERIORS WORKED CLOSELY WITH THE MORRIS COUNTY, NJ HOMEOWNERS TO DESIGN AND INSTALL THE BEST POSSIBLE SLATE ROOF SYSTEM.  THE FINAL PRODUCT CONSISTED OF:

  • 3 different slate widths (9’’,12’’,14’’}
  • 1 single color pattern (Vermont Grey-Black)
  • 16 oz revere copper roof accents (Custom fabricated)

They could not have made better choices!

With all replacement roofing materials chosen – down to the last slate – it was finally time for installation of the new slate roof on the home in Morris County. Head of roofing services arrived at the home as the sun rose on install day. After meeting with the homeowners, Daniel would oversee preparations for the new slate roof installation. To protect the home and siding, extra large tarps were rigged to collect any stray debris. The team also installed a ‘slide’ system from the home roof to the dumpster. The material removed from the home during the roof installation could now easy slide from the roof, directly into the dumpster. After removing the original slate roof material from the home, they were ready to begin installing the new slate roof on the home.  Our team installed Vermont slate with the widths of 9”, 12”, 14” evenly placed throughout the roof, giving a more blended look VS the common uniform style.  “Vermont Grey-Black” is composed of several different colors, blending beautifully throughout the stone slates.   Multiple light and dark grays – that fade to black throughout – complemented with several brown hues gave the slate roof a timeless look.
