Hackettstown Slate Roof Restoration NJ | Slate Roofing NJ | Slate Roof Repair

The historic Second Empire Victorian home was built in 1875 by William Moore Everitt – one of Hackettstown’s most prominent citizens. William served his community jointly as both Mayor of Hackettstown and the President of the Board of Health during the town’s smallpox epidemic in 1901-1902.

Everitt’s House slate roof condition prior to repairs / roof restoration

Historical Slates, corbels and decorative trim replacement on this amazing 1875 Victorian Home in Hackettstown, NJ.  As seen in the before photos, the bed and breakfast went neglected for many years with countless incorrect repairs made over and over again.  The exterior of this historical home even had the slate roof painted over at one point in time.  A new homeowner wanted to breathe life into this Historical Victorian style bed and breakfast landmark located in the center of Hackettstown NJ.

Inspecting Hackettstown, NJ | Historical Roofing Restoration

Upon arriving at the Everitt House in Hackettstown, Head of Specialty Roofing – Daniel Alte – invited the new homeowner to join him on a walk around the residence. While getting familiar with the slate roof, this gave the homeowner an opportunity to ask questions and point out any specific areas of the roof causing them concern.  With the initial walk-through complete, it was time for an in-depth inspection of the entire roof. At this time Daniel investigated all sections and aspects of the roof thoroughly to determine  the areas requiring roof replacement, roof repair, or historic roof restoration.

At this time Daniel investigated all sections and aspects of the Hackettstown slate roof thoroughly to determine  the areas requiring roof replacement, roof repair, or historic roof restoration. Utilizing drone technology, Daniel got ‘up close and personal’ with the roof. This technique would enable him to document and review a number of inaccessible areas with the homeowner. Including all sections of the roof the homeowner would be unable to closely examine otherwise.

Investigation Conclusions- Plan to Restore Hackettstown Historic Roof

With the roof investigation complete, Alte Exteriors Specialty Roofing Team connected with the homeowner to review our findings. This meeting included a presentation of high resolution pictures, video footage, and an inspection report. This documentation gave the homeowner a precise understanding of the historic slate roof’s current condition. With everything inspected and thoroughly documented, our team presented the plan to restore this historic landmark in Hackettstown back to it’s original glory:

Complete removal / replacement of the Mansard slate roof

Removal of built-in Yankee gutter system

Removal / replication of all rotting exterior trim work

Removal / replication of all decorated corbels and crown moldings

Reconstruction of all framing for trim and decorated pieces

Install copper roof details

Historic Roof Production Meeting / Selection of Roofing Materials

With careful consideration, the homeowner reviewed prospective slate colors, sizes, and shapes with the production team at Alte Exteriors. Together, the homeowner and the Alte team decided to go with the original shape and size slate the historic roof had originally featured.  9” wide honeycomb shaped slates.  The color chosen was Grey / Dark Dw.

Historic Roof Repair / Replication of Exterior Trim

Accurate replication of the corbels, crown moldings, rounded window trim and detailed decorative trim (lines the siding under the built in gutters), was critical in the restoration of this Second Empire Victorian residence.  When perfection is required on a historical restoration, Dan calls Hackettstown’s master woodworker – Mark Kramer. Specializing in historic woodworking, Mark Kramer from Finishing Touches completed replications of:

14 curved window header trim sections

5 corbels

40 pieces of double diamond moldings

40 pieces of fleur de li moldings

Armed with the replicated corbels, moldings, and trim, it was finally time to restore this historic landmark.   Once removed, all framing was reconstructed. The replicated corbels and trim were once again installed in their original locations. New slate was then installed in the mansard sections of the roof.  Finally, the installation of all copper roof details would complete the historical restoration of The Everitt House in Hackettstown, NJ. Originally constructed in 1875, by William Moore Everitt.

Our team was beyond grateful for the opportunity to restore this Hackettstown slate roof –  helping this new homeowner breath life back into this beautiful piece of history. Now operating as the Everitt House Bed and Breakfast, located in the center of Hackettstown.
