Alte Exteriors Roof and Skylight Replacements

It has become common knowledge that adding windows to your home helps to make it feel bigger and more open. This also occurs when adding skylights – they too help to bring in natural light and make the room they are in feel more lively. This Readington Roof Replacement including Velux Skylight installation is a prime example of this theory.

Readington roof Replacement in NJ plan of action

is was the case for a project with Michelle – replacing her Readington roof, the addition of four brand new Velux skylights with solar shades. The main floor already featured an open floor plan, however,  the addition of four new Velux skylights really opened up the area. Every morning, these rooms began filling with natural light, from the new Velux skylights. Furthermore, the  aesthetically pleasing skylights Michelle chose were absolutely noticed from the street, increasing her home’s curb appeal, and adding unique character to the roof.

Arriving at the job: Readington roof  replacement and skylight installation

What originally brought Michelle contact Alte Exteriors was the presence of mold in her house. When Alte Exteriors arrived, her entire house had already been gutted on the inside. This meant the mold was no longer an issue needing attention. To prevent the mold from coming back, Michelle took our advice in installing a proper intake in the form of DCI Smartvent along all of the eaves of her house. This Smartvent will act as the intake for ventilation of her roof and it would allow air to go all the way up, eventually reaching the roof peak – to the exhaust – in the form of a ridge vent. With both an intake and exhaust system in her roof, Michelle can rest easy, knowing that mold will not return.

Readington Roof Replacement Process

Removing Existing Shingles

Regardless of any special cases that Michelle fell under, the replacement of her roof is still just as simple as any other. The process began with the removal of the old shingles (with proper protection around the entire house to prevent any damage to siding, walkways or landscaping).

Shingle Removal (continued)

After the first couple of courses of shingles had been removed, the new roof material was raised using the material truck’s crane, and safely placed on the top of the roof. This allows us to save time and money as the material we move weighs thousands of pounds. Normally, the roofing material and dumpster arrive on-site the same morning. Michelle’s case was different however, as she had a dumpster on site that we were able to use.

With the existing roof now removed, the next step is to install the underlayment before we can begin shingling.

GAF Ice and Water Shield Underlayment

With the existing roof now removed, the next step is to install the underlayment before we can begin shingling. GAF Weather Watch Ice and Water Shield was installed six feet up along the eaves as well as in any valleys, against any walls and in this case along any rake lines. We normally do not install Ice Shield along any rakes, however, Michelle decided to go with GAF’s best warranty, Golden Pledge. This warranty requires this additional protection, in order to be eligible.

GAF Tiger Paw Synthetic Underlayment

Where GAF Weather Watch Ice and Water Shield is not installed, GAF Tiger Paw Synthetic Underlayment is laid down to act as a moisture barrier between the shingles and the roof decking.

Drip Edge Installation

Per New Jersey code, we also install aluminum drip-edge along the entire perimeter of the roof. The aluminum drip-edge will help guide the water correctly into the gutter system. The Drip Edge is an aluminum bent piece of metal that goes along the entire perimeter of the roof to help redirect water from the fascia into the gutters. Alte Exteriors custom bends each piece of drip edge metal on-site – allowing a perfect fit on every roof installation.

GAF Starter Shingles

Once the entire synthetic underlayment is installed, the next step is to start shingling the roof. Alte Exteriors will always install GAF Pro Start Starter Shingles along the entire perimeter of the roof – ensuring proper adhesion along the edges of the roof. After this, shingles are ready to be installed on the entire roof.

After the starter shingles are installed, we then shingle the roof (with 6 nails per shingle). 4 nails per shingle is standard for the roofing industry. To ensure proper adhesion to the roof, Alte Exteriors recommends 6 nails per – on every installation. On this NJ Readington roof, the homeowner selected GAF American Harvest Shingles.

GAF Snow Country Ridge Vent

At the roof’s ridge, Alte Exteriors installed GAF Snow Country Ridge Vent and GAF Timbertex  Ridge Caps.

At the peak of the roof (depending on the situation), we will cut out a ridge vent along the entire peak of the roof. The hole cut is two inches wide, on both sides of the ridge beam. The GAF Snow Country Ridge Vent is a rigid material that will last as long as your roof while also providing adequate ventilation.

GAF Timbertex Capping Shingles

The final touch:  Double-Ply GAF Timbertex Capping Shingles are installed along the hips and ridges. Timbertex Capping Shingles offer a double-layer of protection against leaks and blow-offs.
